Last night, my husband and I found out that my daughter-in-law, Nikki, is not sure she will be able to finish her college degree.  She has one semester left and one class left, but since it’s a private college I believe she has maxed out her FAFSA and doesn’t have the last semester’s tuition.

She expressed to us that she was frustrated and on the verge of giving up hope.  I totally relate to that; to her frustration that with only one class, which is an unpaid internship, and the lack of funds available, she may not be able to reach a dream she has worked her ass off to reach.  I feel her pain, and I just wish I had the money socked away to give to her, but I don’t.

Instead, I’ve been racking my brain, trying to think of a way to help her get those needed tuition dollars.  There are scholarships available.  The problem is most of the deadlines for application have long passed.  Not to mention the fierce competition for such funds goes beyond what is reasonable.  At this point, it’s not a viable option.

Getting a traditional loan or even a loan from relatives is impossible.  None of us are rich, so scraping up her tuition fees from personal accounts is next to impossible.  I feel terrible for her.  Her dream is right there at her fingertips yet it’s drifting farther from her grip.

The last approach I’ve considered is helping her set up a crowd-funding page.  I know this can work because my husband and I did this when Skarlette (our dog) broke both front legs.  Since she and the kids are coming in to Houston Saturday, this might be the perfect opportunity to get it all set up.
